The patient file from the Worcester State Hospital had gone through a few hands before a copy of it was shared with Wynn in London. The file was a month old now, detailing the case of Patient 346846:

Name: Mason, Hal
Gender: Male
Age: Approx. 22
Birthplace: Unknown
Check-In Date: March 2, 2017
Ailment: Psychosis
Status: In-patient, solitary

Patient 346846 was discovered on the campus of Boston University in extreme distress. Campus security confirm patient is not current student. Patient claims to be able to hear voices. Patient claims that he is from a world taken over by aliens.

Patient is unable to focus on current surroundings. Doctor prescribed asenapine. Side effects on patient includes drowsiness. Patient has episodes when mixed in with other patients. Assigned to solitary room.

Efforts to locate patient information with government unsuccessful. Unable to locate next of kin: Mason, Thomas (Father).

Normally the file would just be looked over, but it's the link that comes with it that catches people's eyes. On YouTube, there are posted videos from students on campus who captured the incident on film. The video is of a young man in a military jacket curled up on the ground screaming "STOP IT!" at the top of his lungs while clutching his ears. His nose is bleeding, face scrunched up in obvious pain. Three men stand nearby on the edge of the camera shot, one holding a finger to his temple and smirking at the scene.

The file is passed to Sweets, asking for him to make a team and go evaluate the patient and see if there is more to this story than the file indicates. He should hurry though, and bring a team just in case this file has gotten into the hands of others who may also be interested in the patient for their own purposes.

When Sweets, Clark and Alice arrive at the State Hospital, the nurse is actually pleased to see that someone has come to visit Hal. She collects the items from them that could be used by a patient for, well, any reason really, and then hands them each a visitor pass.

"He doesn't get a lot of visitors, you know. Only people from the state trying to determine what they can do for him. Maybe you'll be able to get some real information out of him, Dr. Sweets, so we can send the poor boy home."

She had been gone doing work with Jack for a few days when Hal got the big idea for how he would welcome Allison back to the city. He knew that the trips his wife took away from Teleios were important, but he missed her just the same. Because of that, he always made sure that they had a special date night when she came back from long trips.

So when Allison returned to the Mason house - he would need to find a way to move Allison's place over the backyard batcave between his place and the home that used to be the first!Stiles he knew - he had cleaned up the entire house, and the lights were down, candles lit, and he was making dinner from a recipe that he had gotten from one of the merchants while buying the food. The smell of local spices, chicken, and fresh vegetables sauteed in butter and garlic was starting to fill the kitchen as he hummed to himself.

In the living room was already a little cake tier with pastries from Peeta he had picked up that morning, and there was something extra special in the fridge for later when things got a bit more adult. He had gone through his movie collection and had found "While You Were Sleeping", which was one of his mother's favorite love stories. So that was on top of the DVD player, but until then his Ipod was playing on random.

Take Falling Skies. Take out the Aliens, replace them with zombies.

When the zombie infection hit Boston, the Mason clan got split up and Hal's been trying to find his family ever since. He keeps looking for clues from his father - the biggest history geek in the world - to try and find where they are. He's also keeping his eyes open for his brothers and just praying to God that they were with his parents.

He's eighteen at this point, having been on his own for about two years. He was hooked up with a small military group at one point where he got the crash course of being a soldier and using a gun, but then the group got infected and Hal busted out of there before he got nommed on.

All he's got is his dirt bike that will probably one day run out of fuel and not be able to find a gas station to refill it out, and a small military AK and pistol that should keep him alive. Food and clothing he can scavenge for, but ammo is in low numbers and dwindling.

Slow Steps

Step. Step.

"Keep up the good work, Hal."

Step. Step.

"There's nothing physically wrong with him."

Step. Step.

Hal focused on his legs, finding a way to use his hips and shoulders to move his leg forward another step. He could heard them talking about him, hear that words of encouragement as they passed, but he ignored them all. No one understood what was happening to him, and because of that, no one understood him.

He hated this. Hated being weak, hated being useless... the last year he had spent learning to be a solider. A leader. Someone his mother would have been proud of. And now? Now he was struggling to figure out how to walk across a room again.

Nothing wrong with him? Who the fuck were they kidding here?

Step. Step.

He was supposed to be out there taking the fight to the aliens! He was supposed to be standing - standing - at his father's side when he and Colonel Weaver were planning missions, and not in some dark corner with in his chair. He was supposed to be taking care of his brothers and making sure they weren't getting hurt out there.

Hell, he had a baby sibling on his or her way and what the hell was he going to be able to do but sit around and watch as the kid learned to walk before he was able to again!

Step. S...

"Hal, are you okay?" Lourdes was at his side as Hal shook his arms free of the hand crutches so he could push himself up by his arms. Her hands were checking his face and shoulders but he waved her away. "Hal, just let me..."

"I'm fine, Lourdes," Hal snapped, making her sit back on her heels as he pushed himself up to sitting and worked to rearrange his legs. He took a breath, then looked back over at her again. "Sorry, I shouldn't have snapped like that."

"You're under a lot of pressure, Hal. It's fine." He could tell she was still checking him over for any injuries, and she smiled when she was satisfied that he was okay. "You should take a hot shower and rest. We can do more tomorrow."

Hal nodded, and looked over to where Ben stood. Without a word, Ben easily scooped Hal up in his arms and got helped his brother into the waiting wheelchair before stepping away. Lourdes took the braces off his legs and put them back into place in the stirrups while Hal just sighed and stared at the walls as she did it. She patted his shoulder when she was done and he nodded.

Leaving them all behind, Hal wheeled himself back to his room and slammed the door behind him as best he could.

He shouldn't have to be apologizing to everyone. And they shouldn't have to be making excuses for him either. They all knew the truth, and no one wanted to say it out loud. He was broken, and no one knew how to fix him; and eventually, whatever was happening was going to destroy him.

Just one slow step at a time.

Everyone was excited when Weaver returned to the camp, especially after hearing about the explosions from Boston. The camp had fled, knowing that that the skitters and mechs weren’t going to let the 2nd Mass just slip off into the night without some kind of retribution.

Hal had found his brothers when he had returned. Ben had been with him when their dad had gone off to find Weaver, and they found Matt with Lourdes soon after. Now, his siblings both asleep as the fighters gathered around Weaver, Hal ducked out to go meet his dad and get the details from him. When the other fighters parted for him - almost like the Red Sea had for Moses - Hal realized that something was very wrong.

Weaver stood alone with the group, and his eyes lowered as he noticed Hal approaching. That fear in his gut twisted more, but Hal had to ask. “Where’s my dad?”

“Give us a minute,” Weaver said, and the group dispersed as the Captain approached. He put a hand on Hal’s shoulder and squeezed it tightly. “Son, we need to talk.”

“What happened? Where’s my father?”

Weaver led Hal away, and explained to him what had happened: the alien overlord not expecting the level of resistance; Karen serving as translator; the threats against Ben’s safety; and his father going with them freely and going into their ship. It was too much to deal with and Hal shrugged his shoulder free, trying not to break down in front of the Captain.

“I’m sorry, Hal. You know if there was a chance the aliens would harm you or your brothers, your father was going to put himself in the path.”

“Yeah, I know.” Hal rubbed at his eyes, trying to get rid of the tears before the fell.

“You boys need anything, you just come to me, okay?”

“Yes, sir.”

He left the Captain and took the long way back to the tent. Most of the civilians were sleeping, not realizing the loss yet. But they would hear soon enough, and he needed to make sure that Ben and Matt heard it from him first. But what was he going to tell them?

They had already lost Mom, and now this? Matt was going to be devastated. He was just a little kid. He was supposed to be riding his skateboard and getting into trouble. Ben was supposed to be hiding in a closet with a pile of books and a flashlight. Hell, he was supposed to be enjoying his senior year of high school and making out with his girlfriend under the bleachers while skipping math class.

The same girlfriend that was a slave now to the aliens, and helped take away their father, and turned the three Mason boys into orphans of war. Just how screwed up could his life get?

Ben and Matt were still sleeping when he got back, so he just sat at the flap and watched them. He was too angry to sleep, and he couldn't wake them just yet to tell them the bad news. There wasn't much he could give them in this world, but he could let them have one more night's good sleep without the knowledge that the aliens had taken another member of them away again. He hoped they were both in the middle of some kind of good dream to make it worthwhile.

Hal, however, had a feeling he wasn't going to sleep well again for a long time.
